Escola El Vinyet fromSolsona, and Escola Sentfores and Institut Jaume Callís from Vic have been added to the initial list of participants in Art i Escola 13.
WHAT IS ART I ESCOLA?
ART i ESCOLA is a programme establishing a network of collaboration among different organisations working in the field of art and education, in conjunction with schools. It is based on the premise that education is a part of cultural production, and that the arts, considered as a multiplicity of contemporary forms, may provide several useful tools for revitalising educational activities.
ART i ESCOLA aims to encourage collaborative processes, to find out what is being done in schools in relation to the arts, to share approaches and methodologies between those involved, and bringing to schools elements which form part of current cultural debates.
ART i ESCOLA is promoted by ACVIC Centre d’Arts Contemporànies, Centre de Recursos Pedagògics d’Osona, with Escola d’Art i Superior de Disseny de Vic, H. Associació per a les Arts Contemporànies, Katacrack, UVIC-UCC, and interested individuals.
ART I ESCOLA 13 DEATH
The cycles of life
Each edition starts out with a theme which is broad enough to allow interdisciplinary work, from areas such as social sciences, natural sciences, visual and art education, philosophy, etc.; themes which ordinarily do not form part of the regular school curriculum. This year’s theme was DEATH.
This allowed us to discuss being alive, because this is what makes us indisputably and biologically human.
Many times, in classrooms, we are forced to discuss death due to a personal loss. This year we have brought the subject of death to the foreground in the classroom, before an actual instance of grieve made the theme difficult to talk about.
The theme of Death allowed us to discuss the cycles of life and ecosystems, with their fragility, their beginnings, and their endings; to discuss the seasons, the Earth, living beings, and humanity.
We also discuss finitude and loss. How do we dispose of the things we own, both conceptual and material? Have you ever lost anything? A loved one? What is grief and how does it work? Does everyone grieve in the same way?
The theme of death has opened up a meeting of cultures. The way death is viewed from the perspectives of various cultural groups involved in the participating schools turned art into play, reflection, and debate.
There was an exploration of popular cultural references to death within songs, fables, bestiaries, architecture, and other expressions.
Naming death helps us to love, to cherish, and to enjoy life to the full.
