From appropriationism to memes, images, and the alteration or juxtaposition of images, can become tools for subverting obsolete meanings. In this workshop, we will mount a critical reflection on the image, its uses, and its ability to consolidate narratives. We will review some appropriationist references in the history of contemporary art, and we will make use of humour to create new meanings, and to generate a debate about these meanings from a feminist standpoint.
OBJECTIVES
· To familiarise ourselves with the critical responses and the debates regarding the uses of the image
· To encourage participants’ creativity through accessible digital tools
· To provide participants with tools for using humour from a gender perspective
WORKSHOP STRUCTURE
· A debate on themes such as: What is a meme? What audiovisual content do we consume, and on which platforms? What is visual culture, and how does it connect to the idea of patriarchy? Should we adopt a critical position before images that apparently encourage a male supremacist narrative? What role does humour play in our lives?
· A brief tour of examples of appropriationism (Barbara Kruger, Eulàlia Grau, Jenny Holzer, among others).
· Critical examination of videos or images.
· Creating a meme.
· Sharing and debating the memes created.
· Printing and uploading one of these memes.
