ART + SCHOOL + GAMES is an exhibition based on projects which were carried out by the schools participating in the Art and School 10 programme, based around the theme of Games.
Students from a number of schools have experimented with painting, photography, performative activities and video, while also engaging in critical reflection upon the importance of sharing in play activity, and in playing games. Participating students have realised several artistic projects, ranging from inventing games to an expressive activity with painting, from the search for traditional games preserved in the family memory to suggesting participatory and ludic projects for visitors to the exhibition.
The second edition of the “Art and Infancy” conference was held in May 2009, co-organised by ACVIC and the Early Childhood Education section of Vic University’s Faculty of Education. This second edition focused on "Art and Games and Play", and for this reason H.AAC (Association for Contemporary Arts) published a book collecting critical reflections from a variety of professionals in different fields. In one of these texts, the ceramicist and art historian Carme Collell deals extensively with the relationship between Art and Games and Play. This publication also displays a series of images of pieces that formed part of the exhibition "Act as if…", and the educational projects that were carried out during the exhibition within the space of ACVIC. I consider this to be a landmark document, and essential reading in order to delve deeper into the subject, and to discover the importance of GAMES and PLAY in personal development.
From the art which may be found in museums, in art centres, or in public space, we can appreciate how artists incorporate the strategies of GAMES and PLAY in the creative process, particularly at the beginning, when the piece is still only in its intentional stage. At that moments, ideas arise spontaneously, even crazily, which allow us to IMAGINE the impossible, thus becoming an essential resource for getting closer to emotions beyond technique. As P. Aldo Rovatti points out in the aforementioned publication; "Games and play teach us to get over reality, so that we may soon find ourselves somewhere else."
The presence of toy objects which are often to be found in many pieces of art allows us to remember shared experiences that strengthened the bonds of friendship, and allowed us to LEARN the rules and limits of reality. In this sense, toys are objects with a huge symbolic freight that awaken latent emotions. In the process of ART, GAMES and PLAY are implicit in the predisposition of the artist theirself, in the impulse that pushes them to create something new that excites or provokes us, something that promotes some kind of TRANSFORMATION, personal or collective. This attitude has a direct relationship with the act of EDUCATING and with the pleasure of playing, and therefore also with the challenge, the risk and the desire to achieve the ultimate goal, just as when we were small and ran excitedly towards the the tree, the stone or the wall that symbolised home or shelter, and when we managed to touch it we shouted out loud, SAFE!
GAMES and PLAY is not an academic discipline, or a set of knowledge and concepts that need to be explained. Rather it is quite the opposite. It is a natural predisposition of individuals, and also of animals. It is a spontaneous impulse, and an expression of joy and creativity. An impulse that, as we grow, unfortunately, we come to inhibit.
This school year is the tenth anniversary of the ART and SCHOOL project. Ten years of uninterrupted activity that has allowed us to expand our knowledge on such exciting themes as LIGHT, VOID and CHAOS, among others. I am convinced that, like GAMES and PLAY, the ART AND SCHOOL project has lent us permission us to LEARN, IMAGINE and TRANSFORM the limits of our reality.

10 YEARS OF ART AND SCHOOL
The ART I ESCOLA programme started in 2011, promoted by ACVIC Center d'Arts Contemporànies and the Centre de Recursos Pedagògics d'Osona, in collaboration with various institutions and agents in the fields of the arts and pedagogy, together with those schools (infant, primary and secondary) that work in close collaboration with the programme every year.
There have been nine editions, and the tenth is currently underway. In each of them, about thirty schools have participated, mainly from the Osona region, but also from Bages, Barcelonès, Lluçanès, Moianès, Ripollès, Solsonès, Vallès Oriental, Vallès Occidental and Mallorca. Since the AE06 edition, the programme has been expanded to the Vallès Oriental, in collaboration with the Associació Cultural de Granollers. And the AE09 edition has been replicated in La Seu d’Urgell ,with the involvement of La Seu d’Urgell City Council.
Art i Escola attempts to encourage collaborative processes, to raise awareness of what is practised in schools in relation to the arts, to share this work, to influence planning and the methodologies of those involved in the programme, bringing elements to the school environment that form part of contemporary cultural debates. Art and School understands that the arts may form connections between a variety of disciplines taught in school, between teachers in various schools, between those who work in the field of arts and teachers, while also representing a valuable learning instrument for students, focused on project work.
The objectives of the project are; to promote and encourage the appreciation of the presence of art in and from school; to offer support to teachers in developing transversal projects, and in training in the field of arts teaching; to raise the visibility of projects and work carried out in schools; to establish a network of collaborations between various agents and organisations in the field of art and education; and to share resources, methodologies, and evaluation strategies.
Across 10 years, 28,233 students from 73 schools have participated in Art i Escola, carrying out 315 different projects. 68 people have taken part in the advisory team.
This year, 21 schools are taking part in the AE10 edition, carrying out 21 different projects, with a total of 1,888 participating students.
