1st PROGRAMME OF DIGITAL ARTS
The First Programme of Digital Arts in Vic explores the current scene of digital creation in Catalonia with a programme which combines events open to the general public, experimentation, and the participation of established artists. The programme will examine the digital arts with reflections upon the creative process and the social implications of digitisation, while placing artistic practices in the centre of the debate through dissemination, creation and education.
IA: AIXÒ NO ÉS ART // AI: THIS IS NOT ART
GROUP SHOW
6/10/23 to 25/10/23
The exhibition IA: Això No És Art does not exist yet. It is, in fact, an experimental proposal for pushing creation to the limit using the new tools of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Starting solely with an initial guiding thread questioning the meeting point between the material and digital worlds, the content of the exhibition will be exclusively created by generative AI tools; generating images and texts, press releases, and even academic writings analysing the content of the exhibition, or a final catalogue book. Both the material generated, as well as content-generation methodologies and tools, will be made available to the general public, who will be invited to create new iterations of the content.
Conceived by artists and researchers Joan Soler-Adillon and Christian Penedès, IA: Això No És Art will also be a space for debate on the technological, but above all the ethical and social limits of this new technology. The exhibition is part of the first edition of CADVic, (Digital Arts Programme).

MERCURI, artwork by Alba G. Corral at CCVic Joan Triadú (C. Arquebisbe Alemany 5, Vic) – 04/11 – 12/12/23
From its beginnings, digital art has been a practice of boundaries, of finding holes and existing in the fissures, in order to invent itself, like every discipline, but also in order to find its place and its ways of doing things; while at the same time, working with a technology which has rarely been designed for these practices, discovering and revealing us its strengths and weaknesses, from an often pioneering estance. Now, as an already strongly established discipline, digital art invites us to understand a gap which, in this case, closes: it forms the hybrid space between the material and the digital, between the physical and the virtual world.
Art Digital: Transitant les escletxes presents four different perspectives on this fact, from four of the most important digital artists in the country, all of them with an important international reach. The visual landscapes of Mercuri, by Alba G. Corral, will be combined with the experimentation on perception of BHDD, by Roc Parés, in two very different approaches to immersion through technology. On the other hand, the handmade electronic devices of Mónica Rikić and the work Carbolytics, by Joana Moll, invite us to evaluate both what we perceive of technology, and what technology wishes to make invisible to us.
Joan Soler-Adillon
Artist and lecturer at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), where he is a member and current director of the DARTS research group. He has previously held academic positions at Royal Holloway, University of London, and Pompeu Fabra University. His research and practice centres around interactive digital media and their manifestation in digital art, and their pioneering role in the creation of spaces of contact between the real and the virtual. From a full-body interaction game on an inflatable slide to an experimental documentary in Virtual Reality, he has participated in several interactive projects, often seeking the collaboration and participation of the general public. His artistic works have been seen at the main European XR festivals, and in cities such as London, Paris, Berlin, Zurich, Barcelona, Beijing and New York.
Alba G. Corral
Alba G. Corral (Madrid, 1977) based in Catalonia (La Ràpita) is a visual artist, code developer and teacher. With a background in computer engineering, Corral has been creating art using software for the past decade. Her practice spans across performance, video, digital media and installation. Through various artistic practices she explores abstract narratives. She has made her name through live audiovisual performances where she integrates coding and execution, in collaboration with musicians in real time.
Alba G. Corral, Mercuri, 2023
Mercuri explores the beauty of complexity through algorithms and generative code both visually and aurally, using open source tools. An immersive, contemplative and abstract piece that explores immersive language centred on digital aesthetic elements, speculating with new textures and movements.
Joana Moll
Artist and researcher lives between Barcelona and Berlin. Her work critically explores how techno-capitalist narratives affect the literacy of machines, humans, and ecosystems. Her main research topics include internet materiality, surveillance, social profiling and interfaces. She has presented her work in renowned institutions, museums, universities and festivals around the world such as the Venice Biennale, MMOMA, Laboral, CCCB, ZKM, Bozar or Ars Electrònica among many others. Her work has appeared widely in international media such as The New York Times, The Financial Times, Der Spiegel, National Geographic, Quartz, Wired, Vice, The New Inquiry, Netzpolitik, El Mundo, O'Globo, La Reppublica, Fast Company, CBC, NBC or MIT Press.
Joana Moll, Carbolytics, 2022
Carbolytics is a project at the intersection of art and research, which aims to raise awareness and to call for action with regard to the environmental impact of pervasive surveillance within the advertising technology (AdTech) ecosystem, as well as offering a new perspective to address the social and environmental aspects of the costs of opaque data collection practices.
Mónica Rikić
Her proposals merge technology and philosophy through art, creating technological artefacts far from the need for any functionality or productivity, constructing critical devices which trigger collective thought and discussion. Formally, her practice is based on the production of handmade electronic objects and robots, which perform different concepts of her research field, presented as theatrical devices, offering experiences which offer alternative ways of thinking about technologies, the robotics and AI. seeking to 'question if' and to 'illustrate how' artistic research is a valid way of rethinking and collaborating with the advancement of techno-scientific knowledge, providing new perspectives and generating unknown paths of exploration.
Mónica Rikić, Mónica Rikić. Artisanal alternative technologies 2023
Based on their basic physiognomies, their code architecture and emergent autonomous development, the devices simulate, through physical-digital behaviours, processes that invite their identification as sentient organisms.
Roc Parés
Artist researcher in interactive communication. He is Honorary Artistic Creator of the National System of Art Creators of FONCA (Mexico). His artistic works, characterised by poetic and critical experimentation with new technologies, have been presented at the Contemporary Culture Centre of Barcelona (CCCB), Fundació Joan Miró (FJM), Museu Nacional Centre d'Art Reina Sofia (MNCARS) , Centre Cultural de Belém, Tate Gallery, Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) National Museum of Photography, Film and Television (NMPFT), Cultural Centre of Spain in Mexico (CCEMX), Ex Teresa Art Actual, Laboratoire Paragraphe Université PARIS 8 , Brandts Danmarks Medie Museum, Centrale Montemartini, among others. Since 1995, he has been a lecturer and researcher at the Department of Communication at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), in Barcelona.
Roc Parés, BHDD, 2019
BHDD is an experimental research project that aims to deconstruct virtual subjectivities and to critically examine their mediating function of human experience in interactive audiovisual environments.
