Oristà is a short novel set during the Spanish Civil War, the events of which manifest direct repercussions upon the present day.. Past and present become superimposed, at times confused, until truth and lies, reality and fiction, memory and forgetting, become inextricably overlapped. A reflection upon the possibility of seeing ourselves as we really are, of seeing where we have come from, and where we are going – or of not seeing. It takes its title from the name of a town in Lluçanès, where the action of the novel begins, in the present, and ends, in the past.

Xavier Tornafoch is a Doctor in history, a lecturer and a political and social activist. He is the author of various books of narrative fiction, among which are the short story anthology My Name is Vargas and other stories (Emboscall, 2001, re-published in 2006), Architecture of Voices (emboscall, 2014), and the novel Promise of Liberty (Pagès, 2013).
His narrative work reflects a wide range of interests, from the modern history of Catalonia to a close-up of everyday reality. However, there is always to be found in his work a denunciation of injustice and exploitation, whether on the domestic level or within historical events, or indeed, the injustice and exploitation which may be seen or experienced in the present day. Even so, he is neither a militant nor an apologetic writer, but one who seeks, in the foreground, to create worlds, situations – whether based on historic or fictitious, real or imaginary events – which unfold for the reader, through a display of satisfying prose.
