Roots: traces of the past which connect us to the future

Getting to the roots of the matter implies action, search, expectations, adventure. The root nourishes and sustains. It gives answers and generates new questions. The roots are the teeth of inheritance; the net and the hole; the visible and the invisible; memory; life and death.

Getting to the roots of the matter is the active and intentional exercise of wishing to encounter the roots. Finding them involves movement, even if it is small. It involves playing with time and moving through space, sometimes journeying hundreds of kilometres. Roots shape identity and give meaning to the words of our languages. Roots allow birds to migrate across geographical boundaries, and to know the way back.

According to the classification of Western biology, there are different types of roots, depending on their depth, their shape, their colour and their function. There is also something magical to be learned: that they seek, communicate and care for each other. There are more superficial roots, and there are deeper roots. Some grow above ground, even exposed and in the open, and others are edible.

Playing with the concept of the root has led students from participating schools to visit the bottom of a swamp, to connect and describe their family origins, or to peel an image down to its most essential and abstract lines. All of them, multiple meanings and different ways of playing with a concept which goes hand in hand with other supporting concepts, such as "process" and "community". Just as plants interact with their roots, forming a community wherever they live, the word root cannot be understood in isolation. Much value has been given to creative and community processes in the works presented in this edition of ART + SCHOOL.

Paying attention to roots has made it possible to discover the wealth they host and the possibilities they offer on the artistic, personal and community levels. And they allow us to continue to grow and to take us to new places, if we keep feeding them.

ART AND SCHOOL

The ART AND SCHOOL programme establishes a network between organisations in the fields of arts and education, together with schools. Its starting premises are that education is part of cultural production, and that art, understood in its multiplicity of contemporary forms, can provide several useful tools for revitalising educational activities.

The ART AND SCHOOL programme aims to encourage collaborative processes, to find out what is happening in schools in relation to the arts, to blend together approaches and methodologies among those involved, and to bring those elements which form part of current cultural debates into schools.

In each edition, a broad enough topic is proposed to allow interdisciplinary work, from areas such as social sciences, natural sciences, art education, technology, mathematics, and IT, among other disciplines. This year’s topic is ROOTS
